I will admit before I go any further that I am not a real Bordeaux lover. I find them all a bit samey and just lacking a certain something. I am more of an Austrailin Shiraz kinda gal, a wine that has a full body and a real something to it. However again I undertook a blind tasting and suprisingly enough I managed to get the country and region correct, maybe this WSET thing is doing its magic!
The first Bordeaux tried was a developing wine with Black fruit, Mint and Cloves on the nose which followed through to the palate with hints of Smoke and Oak coming in to join the party. This was a good wine, and could definitely be aged or drunk now and would go great with a nice hunk of meat. This was the more expensive Bordeaux and when compared to the second this was noticeable.
The second Bordeaux had more of a Red fruit characteristic compared to the Black fruit of the first. There is also Oak in the nose this time where the former only had this characteristic on the palate. The palate shows these secondary flavours with Vegetal and Sweet spice too along with some Blackcurrant hints and other Black fruits. Again this wine could be aged or drunk now and was also a good wine.
After drinking both these wines I have to say I am still not a convert to the Bordeaux lovers religion but I am less opposed to it. Maybe after a few more bottles I may convert however until then I am quite happy sitting on the fence.
Again Majestic wine sell a large varitey of Bordeaux and other French wines and all of these can be found on their easy to use website.
