I have to be honest, before starting to work in the wine trade I hadn’t even heard of En Primeur let alone understood anything about it!I am not going to lie and say that I am now an expert but I have learnt a lot in the last week about the wines and also about people. I thought there was only a mad rush when it came to sample sales I didn’t realise it was the same in En Primeur! The pressure to make sure that the high rollers are kept sweet, the wines released are good enough and then the biggest pressure of all, the question of do I buy any myself!
This has been the hardest part as being in the midst of it all and understanding to some degree which appear to have a better return than a bank right now you have to think long and hard about purchasing. Right now I am debating about a nice case of Lafite as this is supposed to be the big one this year, though the other first growths are also meant to be great. However the decision needs to be made fast or otherwise I will miss it as its popularity is almost unsurpassed.
