Shoes: The “Expensive Vs Cheap” Comfort Debate

Let me first start by defining expensive and cheap; I would put under £100 as “cheap” and over £100 as “expensive”, however this may differ between people as income differs. To put it in more realistic terms, if you have to sacrifice something else for the shoes they are expensive, if you don’t then they are cheap.

I have had the grand total of 3 expensive pairs and I have to say all 3 were like slippers and were worn and re-heeled many a time to “get my money’s worth out of them”, one pair was literally falling apart before I gave in and sent them off to shoe heaven. I still have one pair left and they are my brown Italian real leather knee high boots with a kitten heel. And they really do go with so many outfits! However I have also had a pair of £35 black pumps from the high street which lasted years and were really comfortable and rather stylish, until I dribbled milk on them at work - yes I had to work as a waitress to fund my shoe and champagne and wine habit!

So this brings me to the point of how much should you pay for comfort? Now many a woman will say you pay what the price tag says on the pair that is comfortable, and to be honest I am tempted to agree. However I have friends who after splashing out on a pair of £350 + shoes are crippled after 10 minutes in them and that doesn’t include walking! So why pay the money? Yes they may be the prettiest things since the last pair you bought, or they may be the ones that SJP wore for 2 minutes in a Sex and the City episode but does that make them worth paying £350 for a blister or four?! I am thinking no.

So does this make me a shoe philistine? I love shoes as much as the next girl drooling over the newest Mui Mui’s in the window but I also have a part of me that cannot block out the pain experienced not only on the night but also the following few days until the blisters settle and the pain goes away.

Overall I have to say I am all for paying the price tag on the slipper comfort shoes but not the painful blisters for the next week shoes. However I may not remember this when I walk past the next shop and see those gorgeous heels or flats or boots looking out at me!
